2015 Collegiate Retailer of the Year Award Winner

The CU Bookstore at the University of Colorado Boulder

Embracing change is just the way the CU Book Store, University of Colorado Boulder, goes about its business. The store even has signs that say, “We’ve Always Done It That Way” in a big red circle with a line through it to remind staff that change works.

“That was one of the first things I did when I became the director,” said Brian Groves, CCR, director of retail services. “I think it just kind of sets the culture that we need to be open to change and open to new ideas and pay attention to what’s working for other schools and if it makes sense we should try it.”
That commitment to change helped set the CU Book Store apart when it came time to award the 2015 Collegiate Retailer of the Year (CROY) Award. The CU Book Store became the third recipient of the award, presented by the NACS Foundation during the Saturday Mega Session at CAMEX 2015 in Atlanta, GA. The $5,000 award, given on a biennial basis, is underwritten by the Tommye and Keith Miller Endowment Fund.

“The staff is extremely proud, and deservedly so,” Groves said. “I’ve received a lot of emails and congratulations from different administrators and people on campus.”

The CROY Award requires the winner to show its connection to the campus through its commitment to customers, academic support, and the shopping experience provided. The CU store scored with judges in each category.
