I want to extend my sincerest thanks and gratitude to all of the NACS Foundation’s volunteers and donors this holiday season. You gave freely of your time, treasures and talents despite all of the challenges faced this year. Your support enabled the Foundation to generously give back to the college store industry as never before!
This moment in the college store industry is considered by some to be a turning point. The expansion of textbook rental programs, prevalence of digital products, and fierce online competition are all hot topics. With so many potential threats to the viability of the college store industry these days, five major publishers have chosen this moment in time to take a stand in support of college stores.

Shirley Landis started her career in this industry in 1989 working at Temple University Bookstore with Bill Fitzgerald (MACS Past President 1986-1987). She began working at Philadelphia University (then known as Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science) in 1991 under the capable management of Kathy Grace, (MACS Past President 1998-99 & NACS Past President 2006-07). Shirley became the Director of Philadelphia University Bookstore in 1992. Her most recent career achievement is being installed as the Middle Atlantic College Stores President at the 40th Anniversary meeting in November.
As President Elect, Landis chaired the MACS Annual Meeting Committee and had the honor of planning the regional association's 40 year celebration.
The excitement for CAMEX is building momentum and the time is passing by quickly. The boxes are being packed, the signage is being ordered and the corridors of NACS headquarters are covered with reminder signs that the “truck” leaves for Houston in 10 weeks. 10 WEEKS! The countdown is on but there is still time for companies to partner with the
NACS Foundation 2011 CAMEX fundraising events.
Companies receive much more than goodwill for supporting the
Bring A Buyer to CAMEX grant program (BAB) and the
Online Auction (OA). Utilizing a mix of marketing efforts, the NACS Foundation spotlights its partner companies to maximize their exposure and increase sales leads. Visit the
Partner Opportunities page online to view all of the benefits to becoming a partner.
The funds raised from these programs directly support the Foundation’s efforts in providing educational opportunities, professional development grants, and critical industry research. With the generosity of our partners, the NACS Foundation will assist 120 buyers to attend CAMEX this year. The revenue generated from the Online Auction will benefit current programs and research in the upcoming year.

Kathy Tullius began her illustrious career in the college store industry as a cashier in 1980 and almost didn’t get the job. "They said I was too short to read the top row of ‘pre-priced keys,’” she remembers with a chuckle. “In those days the registers had special keys for bluebooks, liquid paper and pencils, so I told them I’d memorize the top row or wear heels to work."
Her quick thinking paid off. These days Kathy is the Assistant General Manager at CCSF Bookstores and a devoted volunteer. She has served on a wide variety of committees in support of the college store industry, including the NACS Education Committee, the Presidents Advisory Committee and the CCR Item Review Committee. She has also served as a “Gem Cutter” for the NACS Foundation and participated in the Foundation’s Phonathon on September 28-29. During the two day event, Kathy contacted numerous vendors on behalf of the NACS Foundation. She secured over $10,000 for the Online Auction and $4400 in support of the Bring A Buyer to CAMEX program. She is currently on the NACS Business Task Force.
Fifteen stores were awarded College Store of 2015 Investment Grants and are busy working on their respective projects in full force! It has been an overwhelmingly successful project to date just by gauging the enthusiasm and genuine thanks that the Foundation has received. It’s amazing to see how $1,000 has jumpstarted ideas and new processes for these college stores.
