IN THIS ISSUE From the Immediate Past President
Mark Palmore, Executive Director, Connect2One
What a year it has been for the NACS Foundation, certainly one we can all be proud of both now and in the future. Last year, we set out to launch an Annual Fund and to begin work on what we call the "Big Idea."
The Annual Fund got off to a successful start. Under the leadership of George Masforroll, director of Bookstores at Broward College, the Annual Fund blew through its first year stretch goal of $20,000. Congratulations to George and the Annual Fund Committee on a job well done.
The "Big Idea" Task Force, co-chaired by NACS Foundation President Debbie Harvie, Director of the University of British Columbia Bookstore, and NACS Foundation Past President Fred Neely, Director of Bookstore Services, Forty Niner Shops Inc., California State University Long Beach, was formed to identify where we all need to be to prevail the challenges of the store of the future. That big idea is to Research, define and promulgate the college store of 2015 (see full article below).
I'm proud that the Foundation was able to launch these two major initiatives under my watch and this past year has been one I will never forget. I thank all of you for allowing me to serve as your NACS Foundation President 2008-09!
Palmore joined Connect2One in April 1998 and assumed the duties of executive director in 2002. Before joining Connect2One, Palmore worked for more than 17 years in higher education publishing. While in publishing, he served as a sales manager, director of career education sales, and for more than 10 years as director, college bookstore relations.
In the college bookstore industry, Palmore has served on several state, regional, and NACS committees. He served as president of the Southwest College Bookstore Association from 2001-2002 and on the Board of Directors for the NACS Foundation 1996-1997; 2003-2005; and as president for 2008-09.
The year 2009 marks the 28th year in the college bookstore industry for Palmore, who resides in suburban Cincinnati, OH with his wife Carla, and their two children, Haley, 14, and Braden, 12..
A Foundation Year of Giving
The remarkable generosity of our donors has allowed the Foundation to have a significant impact on the college store industry this past year. Here is a brief summary:
Millers' Gift to Spotlight Store Success
Tommye Miller, CCR, retired director and general manager, Valdosta State University Stores, Valdosta, GA, hopes that every college store will one day be recognized for the vital role it plays for whatever campus it serves.
For more than 30 years, Tommye Miller, CCR, led the college store industry by example. Throughout her career, Miller held herself, her staff, and her store to the highest of standards. Now retired, she wants to recognize other college store professionals who go above and beyond what is expected.
Building on Tradition, Defining the Future
NACS Foundation embarks upon most significant research project in its history
In April 2008, the Foundation Board met with a diverse group of industry leaders and young professionals to strategically look at the future of the Foundation and to help determine what would have the greatest impact on the industry. Armed with information from this group, the Foundation Board created the Big Idea Task Force to determine the Foundation's next strategic priority to "Research, define and promulgate the college store of 2015."
Falgien Earns Distinguished Service Award
What does it take to earn the NACS Foundation's most prestigious recognition? Look no further than the accomplishments of Peggy Falgien, CCR, retired director, University Bookstore, University of Wyoming, Laramie. With an unrelenting drive to serve the college store industry, even in retirement, Peggy Falgien, CCR, former director, University Bookstore, University of Wyoming, Laramie, has put herself at a level many in the industry can only hope to achieve.
Real Innovation...Real Rewards!
The NACS Foundation will begin accepting submissions July 15, 2009 in search of the next Innovation Achievement Award recipient. Funded by the Martin D. Levine Endowment Fund, the award is a tribute to Martin D. Levine for his creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. The award recognizes outstanding development, implementation, and creative entrepreneurship of a new and/or existing collegiate retailing program or service. A $5,000 award is presented to the top college store program with additional honorable mention awards presented.

Value-added Purchases on the NACS Foundation Online Auction
Point. Click. SOLD! College store buyers and industry suppliers found great values on the newest merchandise, credit memos, technology gadgets, one-of-a-kind items, dream vacations, and more during this year's Online Auction.
Bringing Buyer Power to CAMEX
Considering the sensitive state of the economy, NACS Foundation took proactive measures this year and increased the number of Bring A Buyer to CAMEX grants. Instead of offering 50 grants traditionally available through the program, 75 recipients were awarded full registration to CAMEX and additional money for travel/housing expenses. Additional college store buyers were awarded partial grants, which provided budget registration to CAMEX and money to cover some traveling and housing expenses.
